Facing Forward Looking Back

Facing Forward Looking Back responds to the beech groves of Stoner Hill in Hampshire and the chalk grasslands at Harting Down in Sussex. The realisation that each viewing point looks out toward to the other brings an enhanced sense of mirroring; of both inner and outer landscapes, referenced here by sculptures made with organic materials ‘of the place’.

Two forms face each other, one carved from chalk, the other cast from beech leaves, referencing the earth both as holding vessel and as witness, with copper leaf apertures offering a gaze, a moment of reflection.

Chalk, copper leaf, beeswax, beech leaves, cellulose

Beech leaf mache vessel: 90cm diameter x 50 cm
Chalk sculpture: 20cm diameter x 6cm

Facing Forward Looking Back (ii and iii) further explore the concept of hagstones, those flint pebbles with holes in them, associated with healing and protection, the apertures illuminated by copper leaf to evoke a sense of both presence and absence.
